Pain That Won't Go Away? What Your First Physical Therapy Visit at Muscle IQ in Orem Looks Like

You have had the scan. You have tried the exercises. Maybe you have even done a round of physical therapy. The knee, the back, or the neck still has not settled down, and now you are wondering what another first appointment is going to be like.
That is a fair thing to wonder about before you pick up the phone. Here is what a first visit at Muscle IQ Physical Therapy in Orem involves, and why each piece is there.
We Listen First
The first visit is about getting to know you. Dr. Chris Knudsen enjoys helping people and listening to their stories, and the story matters: when the pain started, what you have already tried, and any health history that could be feeding the problem.
We also ask what getting better means to you. Hiking the Wasatch foothills, lifting, sitting through a drive up I-15, picking up a grandchild without thinking about it.
That question is not small talk. In a 2017 study of 225 patients at an outpatient clinic, Zeppieri and George found that what people counted as success at the start stayed the same through discharge, and that what they wanted was better than what they expected. It was one clinic and an observational study, so it proves very little on its own. It does suggest the goal you walk in with is worth saying out loud on day one.
We Test Muscles, Including Ones That Do Not Hurt
Pain does not only live in the sore spot. When something hurts, your nervous system can turn the muscle tone dial down, and a muscle that should be doing its job goes offline. Nearby muscles then work overtime and tighten up. The ache you feel may be the overworked area, not the muscle that stopped pulling its weight.
So a Muscle IQ evaluation looks past the painful spot. Strength is tested in the muscles around it and sometimes well away from it. A weak muscle that does not hurt can point toward where the problem actually lives.
What Happens During Your First Visit
The practical version is simple, and you can often watch it happen inside a single visit.
Muscles get tested, including ones you never mentioned.
Hands-on care is based on what the testing shows, aimed at the area that appears to be holding a muscle back. That is called muscle inhibition.
Those same muscles get tested again.
When a muscle that gave way holds a few minutes later, no tissue rebuilt itself in the meantime. The signal to the muscle changed. That is information, and it helps show where to look next. Not everyone shows that change on the first visit, and one test is never the whole picture.

We Explain What We Find
A scan shows structure. Muscle testing shows how the muscles are working. Both can be useful, and you should leave knowing what was found, what it may mean, and what the plan is, in plain language.
If you have been told your scan looks normal but the pain is real, tell us. A normal scan does not always explain pain that is still there. We see this with knee pain, low back pain, and neck pain.
You Stay in Control
If you have had a bad experience before, say so, and tell us what happened so we can take it into account. If you are simply unsure, you can try things slowly and safely, always in control, and you can stop at any point.
A first visit is about building trust, not fixing everything at once. It is a full evaluation, not a quick look at the sore spot, because finding what is driving the problem starts there.
