Research on the brainstem shows that a region called the reticular formation acts as the integrator for all of this. It combines your visual, inner-ear, and body-position signals and then decides — moment to moment — how much drive to send to the muscles that hold you upright. It also prepares your body a fraction of a second before you move, so you are already braced before your weight shifts.
In other words, balance is coordinated from the ground up: sensation travels up from your feet and joints, gets integrated in your nervous system, and comes back down as steadiness. When any part of that loop gets sluggish, the whole system can feel less reliable.

Here is where it gets encouraging. Your nervous system has a kind of muscle tone dial — it controls how quickly and how strongly your muscles respond. Balance training appears to sharpen the brain's control over that dial.
A study published in The Journal of Physiology followed older adults through six months of balance training. Researchers found that the training measurably improved the fine-tuning control in the motor part of the brain, and that the people who improved the most on balance were the same ones whose brain control improved the most. The two changed together.
Two details from that study matter for anyone starting this work. First, the change was real and lasting — it was still measurable a year later. Second, it took time. There was little change at two months, but a clear change at six. Balance is not rebuilt in a single visit.
