5 Signs You Need Physical Therapy After a Car Accident

Car accidents are more damaging than most people realize. You can walk away from a crash feeling okay, and then wake up three days later barely able to turn your head. This happens all the time.

The problem is that most people don't get the right treatment — or they wait too long. Here's what to look for.

1. Neck Pain or Stiffness

Whiplash is the most common injury we see after a car accident. The sudden jolt forces your neck beyond its normal range of motion, damaging the muscles, connective tissue, and joints. If your neck feels stiff, sore, or painful with movement — don't ignore it. Whiplash that goes untreated can become chronic pain.

2. Low Back Pain

Your low back absorbs a tremendous amount of force during a collision. Even a low-speed impact can strain the muscles and deep connective tissue of your back. Low back pain after an accident is a red flag that something needs to be addressed.

3. Muscle Weakness

This one surprises people. After an injury, your brain reduces muscle output to protect the area. You may not feel weak at first — pain usually shows up before weakness does. But if we test your muscles manually, we can find the weakness that's hiding underneath the pain.

4. Headaches

Post-accident headaches often originate from the neck, not the head. Tension in the muscles and soft tissue of the neck can refer pain up into the skull. If you're getting headaches after a crash, the source of the problem is probably lower than you think.

5. Pain That Seems Unrelated to the Accident

Pain that shows up in your shoulder, arm, or hip after a car accident is often directly connected to the crash — even if it doesn't seem like it. Injury patterns are complex. At Muscle IQ, we evaluate the whole body, not just the area that hurts.
