Real life rarely offers that. A missed step on a stair. A dog that lunges on the leash. A pickleball that comes back faster than expected. Those moments ask a different question: how quickly can your nervous system read the situation and get the right muscle to fire?

That is a question about speed of processing, not size of muscle — and for an athlete, it is often the real gap between "cleared" and ready to return to sport. After an injury, it usually takes longer to answer.

What an Injury Changes Beyond the Tissue

An injury does not only damage tissue. It also changes the quality of the information that joint sends back to your brain.

At Muscle IQ we describe that as the muscle tone dial — your nervous system's setting for how strongly and how quickly a muscle contracts. A 2025 clinical review in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy looked at recovery after an ACL tear — the knee ligament injury common in cutting and pivoting sports. It described a pattern where patients start leaning more heavily on their eyes to control the leg, because the position signal coming from the joint has become less reliable.

The authors recommended starting sensory retraining early — within the first weeks — before that visual habit settles in, and progressing it by varying four things:

  • the task itself

  • how much the patient can rely on watching

  • the mental load of the exercise

  • how unpredictable the movement is

That list reads a lot like a description of reaction training.

What the Research Suggests

We should be straight about the evidence here. The studies below did not test these pods. They tested the kind of demand the pods create, and that is why we find them useful.

A 2024 review pooling thirteen studies asked whether exercise strengthens the body's own ability to turn pain signals down. General conditioning — cardio, weights, holding a muscle tight against resistance — did not show a reliable effect across those studies. Exercise that demanded attention to accuracy while moving did. The type of work appeared to matter, not just the effort put into it.

Balance research adds a useful wrinkle. In a 2024 study in The Journal of Physiology, older adults who trained balance skills showed a measurable change in how the brain regulates movement, and the size of each person's balance improvement tracked with the size of that change. In that study, two months of training was not enough to produce it; six months was, and the trained group was still testing better a year later.

Worth noting: those were healthy older adults, where the brain's control settings tend to drift the opposite direction from what happens after a painful injury. The useful point is not the direction — it is that these settings are trainable at all, and that the change is real, measurable, and gradual.

Not Just Athletes — Steadiness in Utah County

Reaction training reads like sports rehab, and plenty of our patients are athletes. But the same skill matters most to people who never think of themselves that way.

If you feel unsteady coming down stairs, take an extra half-second to correct a stumble, or find yourself watching your feet on uneven ground, that is the same underlying ability: read the situation, respond before you have time to think about it. It is closely tied to balance, and it can be worked on.
